Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard duty. ― Albert Einstein

This interview is just a glimpse into what the life of Susan Miessler was like in high school. There are sure to have been many other memories and moments that impacted her life but hopefully this will offer some insight into just what time spent at Randolph can be like and the impact it can have on the future.

The Interview: Class of 1995

Q: What was your time in highs school like? What was your favorite memory during that time?

"[High school was] Fun and memorable. I was in the color guard, [and] it was a sisterhood."

Q: If you could tell your high school self one thing you know now what would it be? Why is it important to tell yourself that?

"Take time to do the work, being intrinsically motivated didn’t happen for me until college."

Q: What made you decide to come back and teach in Randolph? Were there any teachers that influenced you while you were in high school? Did they change how you thought or what you planned to do with your life after high school?

"I was more influenced by my elementary teachers, Kathy Manning and Mary Curtis."

Q: How has the school district and even the schools themselves changed since your time attending them?

"Technology and communication has made a huge difference. I think Randolph has become more diverse since I grew up here."

Q: What lessons have you learned from coming back to teach that you otherwise would not know?

"[I have learned] A lot about privilege and parenting."

Q: What advice would you give future generations going into high school?

"Pay attention in class, do not get wrapped up in the drama."

Interview notes:

There is something about high school that seems to fly past us and before we know it, its over. We may not be perfect but that allows us to grow and change and understand who we are as a community. Taking a look back in time is how we are able to move forwards and will help Randolph continue to grow.

I would like to take a moment to thank Susan Miessler for her work as a teacher in our school district. She is shaping the future generations to achieve greatness and that truly is no easy task. Please take a moment to acknowledge and think about those great teachers who have sacrificed their time for their students in a hope to make them excited to learn and prepared for the future ahead.
